Challenges

Deforestation poses the greatest threat to the ecology of the Dolphin Head Mountains.  As economic pressures typically drive encroachment (vis-a-vis logging and slash-and-burn agriculture), the Trust seeks to:

  • FireCreate an economic imperative for forest regeneration through the development of conservation-compatible forest-product industries;

  • Prevent clearing of natural forest to maintain the largest possible close-conopy habitat

  • Restore degraded hilltops dominated by invasive plant species with native forest species.

The greatest challenge facing Dolphin Head's natural environment is man.  Driven by a slumbering economy and a lack of formal education, most residents eek out a living by consuming valuable - yet dwindling - natural resources.  Slash and Burn agriculture (as seen to the right) promotes the encroachment of invasive species and loss of critical canopy habitat.
