Partnerships

As a recent player in the environment sector, the Trust has benefited from lessons of its predecessors, both nationally and internationally. The single most important notion the Trust has garnered is that sustainable development cannot be achieved by organizations working in isolation.  Only through genuine partnerships and collaboration can we truly progress towards a healthy and prosperous future.

The Dolphin Head Trust is grateful for the opportunity to have worked with a wide range of government, non-government, donor and private sector groups, as well as too many individuals to mention.  This team effort has yeilded incredible results over the past five years, and laid the foundation for the long-term conservation of the Dolphin Head Mountains.  In particular, the Trust wishes to acknowledge the support of several organizations who's investment in the Trust has enabled us to make significant gains with respect to environmental awareness, conservation and the creation of viable alternative livelihoods in the parish of Hanover.

The Environmental Foundation of Jamaica

With support from the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica, the Trust has implemented several of its most critical projects, including the identification of Economically Viable Alternative Livelihoods (EVAL), which laid the conceptual groundwork for the Bamboo Conversion Facility, the Area Specific Environmental Awareness Project (ASEAP), the Dolphin Head Appropriate Resources Utilization (DHARU), an institutional strengthening, which has improved the project management capabilities of the Trust.

Embassy of Japanese-Overseas Development Assistance

With support from the Embassy of Japan - Overseas Development Assistance Programme, the Trust has both constructed and equipped its bamboo conversion and utilization facility; a cricital part of the Trust's strategy for conserving the environment, whilst generating employment for youth and women of the Dolphin Head Area. Through the JICA programme, the Trust has also benefitted from the technical assistance of three JICA technical specialist volunteers.

Forestry Department

The Dolphin Head Trust's collaboration with the Forestry Department during the UNDP/EFJ funded project in 2001 accomplished more than many other environmental projects of a similar nature with a similar level of funding resources. This tripartite collaboration facilitated information sharing, utilization of existing data collection methodology and data analysis formats developed by the Forestry Department for national application. This facilitated greater accessibility and integration of all the Technical Research data collected. This project partnership has subsequently been heralded as a best practice model by the Trees for Tomorrow Project and UNDP.

United Nations Development Programme

The "Dolphin Head Project", laid the seminal foundations for the Trust's work in the Dolphin Head Reserve and contributed immensely to natural resource management efforts, by enhancing the management of the plants of the areas by local communities. The end result of this collaboration was the inception of a self-sustaining protected area with a primary focus on community strengthening and capacity building activities amongst all stakeholders.
